New Delhi: For the first time, India will be using the Andaman Islands as a missile firing range.
A Brahmos cruise missile will be launched from the sea to destroy a target on an uninhabited island in the Andamans on Wednesday.
India has been unable to establish beyond doubt, the land-attack capability of its missiles so far.
This was because of the lack of availability of an uninhabited stretch on the mainland.
A Bhramos missile will be fired from the Indian Navy destroyer, INS Rajput, at a target in the north Andamans later on Wednesday.
A sea-borne land-attack capability will be central to its military posture in the future.
This capability will be based on both surface warships and submarines. But the use of the Andamans as a missile target could raise environmental concerns.
