New Delhi: Union HRD Minister Arjun Singh’s statement made clear the Government was not averse to open doors for reputed foreign educations providers. But most universities willing to set up shop in India may have to wait.
Sources tell CNN-IBN the HRD ministry will refer the Foreign Education Providers Bill to the PMO, seeking advice in absence of consensus.
The bill was cleared by the Union Cabinet last year, but hours before it was to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha, it had to be withdrawn apparently under Left pressure.
The Ministry has been trying to negotiate with the Left for the past eight months, without success. Now it wants the matter to be resolved in the Left-UPA Coordination Committee meeting.
Then there are differences within the Government as well. The Commerce Ministry and the HRD Ministry have different views on regulating foreign education providers. The ball now is the PM's court.
