India win Bronze in Asian Champs Trophy

New Delhi: India came from behind to upset world number three China 2-1 and win the bronze medal in the inaugural Asian Women Champions Trophy Hockey at Busan, South Korea on Saturday.

Wang Mengyu gave China the lead from a penalty corner in the 16th minute but Saba Anjum got the equaliser in the 24th minute, while skipper Surinder Kaur scored the match winner for India with a 63rd minute penalty corner.

India, ranked 13th in the world, had lost all its three round robin matches earlier to Japan, China and the hosts South Korea.

However they produced their best on Saturday with good attacking combines between Rani Rampal, Saba Anjum, Surinder Kaur, Jasjeet Kaur Handa and Soundarya Yendala, according to information received from Hockey India.

The Indian defence also stood out as Subhadra Pradhan, Binita Toppo and Joydeep Kaur foiled numerous Chinese attacks thus ensuring India third place.
