Hyderabad: An engineering college student in Hyderabad sustained bullet injuries when his senior allegedly opened fire at him in the college premises, police said on Saturday.

Umed Ali Khan, a student at the Deccan college of engineering in Hyderabad was arrested after he shot and injured his junior, Mukarram Ali Siddiqui with a licensed revolver on the college campus.

As students and staff of the college watched in disbelief, Khan brandished a pistol and suddenly started firing at Mukarram as he was waiting near the college office to collect his hall ticket, said the police.

Mukarram is in hospital with serious injuries and his condition is critical. He had filed a police complaint against Umed Ali Khan two months ago, accusing him of ragging. Umed has a history of misbehavior at the college and had been suspended.

“We are investigating the case and looking for important leads. It is clear from eye witness account that Umed Ali fired bullets at his junior Mukarram,” DCP West Zone, N Madhusudan Reddy said.

A student who has been an eyewitness to the entire incident says Umed shot six to seven bullets at the victim. “He came towards him and shot about 6-7 bullets at him. I don't know the reason. We all are students here and even he's also our classmate,” he said.

The college is owned by the family members of local MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

A profusely bleeding Mukarram was immediately rushed to a city hospital where his condition was stated to be serious. Police suspect that a ragging incident involving the two students had led to the firing.
