London: Racial attacks on Indians abroad has been a reason for much concern lately and the nightmare is far from over. According to a new report Indians are a soft target in the UK, particularly in cities like London.

According to the 2001 Census Indians are the single largest ethnic minority in the UK. Now a new report says they are the biggest victims of racial attack too.

The report, co authored by Institute of Race Relations Business Manager Harmit Athwal, says that in 45 per cent of racial attacks, the victims are expatriate Indians. Most of the attacks are increasingly taking place outside big cities like London.

"Particularly with the Indian communities we are seeing them move towards rural areas once they prosper and earn a little more money, and as a result they are moving into areas where they are more visible, and as a result we are seeing more attacks on these type of communities," says Athwal.

The report says these racial attacks are far less prevalent in areas with a large Indian population

"If people are isolated it is very difficult for them alone to fight against organised violence against them, but in other areas where there is a long history in fighting racism, groups are coming out and supporting families and victims of racially motivated attacks," adds Athwal.

Indians are becoming victims of their own success, moving right across the countryside where they are more visible, and more vulnerable. If there is one thing a lot of people don't like more than outsiders who come and settle, it is outsiders who come and settle who have more money than them.
