Indian art big hit in London

London: Indian art definitely seems to be in vogue. After auction houses around the world made record sales on Indian contemporary art, museums are trying to cash in by showcasing these works to the world.

The Victoria and Albert museum in London held a one-of-a-kind show of six Indian contemporary artists.

So when six Indian masters come together to showcase their work at the Victoria and Albert Museum, it reflected the kind of imprint Indian art has made on the world canvas.

Thirty-two of the best Indian contemporary art works were on display - from Jogen Chowdhury's ink drawings to the dramatic canvases of Yusuff Arakkal and the vibrant pieces by Prakash Maity.

By the end of the evening 70 per cent of the show was sold out. For the artists too, the evening was special.

"I never thought that one day I will have a show here. Museum shows are different. They are special," said artist Arpana Caur.

While it's largely the Non-Resident Indians who buy Indian art, mainstream collectors too seem to taking an interest.

"I am quite taken in by Prakash Maity's work. I have bought a modest watercolour, which is beautiful," said an art collector, Andrew Douglass.

"It's mainly NRIs who come to buy paintings here even though others are getting interested," said artist Anjolie Ela Menon.

After the preview, the exhibition will move to the London Air Gallery for a week.

However, going by the response at the preview alone, all the paintings may have been snapped up by art enthusiasts by the time the exhibition reaches the London Art Gallery.
