Hyderabad: As 25-year-old Sravan Kumar Theerthala battles for his life at the Melbourne medical centre, his family in Andhra Pradesh is making all efforts to be by his side.
Sravan's father Chidambar Teerthala, a farmer, has lashed out at the Australian government.
“Australians call themselves a developed country but have no humanity. If their police had responded the right way one month back, when an Indian was attacked on a train, then this would not have happened to my son,” he said.
Sravan has suffered brain damage after some youngsters attacked him and drove a screw driver into his head. His uncle, Dr Srinivas, who helped finance Sravan's automobile engineering course in Melbourne, is now set to leave for Australia after CNN-IBN took up the issue with the Australian High Commission.
"I have not seen the evidence that they are racist. Australia is a multi-cultural society," Australian High Commissioner John McCarthy said.
But an overriding concern for Sravan's family is the cost of his treatment. “We have no idea how much it going to cost but I know it will be beyond our imagination,” said Dr Srinivas.
Sravan's family has now approached the Andhra Finance Ministry for help.
The big challenge for Sravan's family remains getting over legal procedures and finances to reach Australia.
With Sravan in a critical state, the nightmare for his family is yet to end.
