Indian bands make merry in the West

New Delhi: Music lovers in India have had no reason to complain for a while as international superstars from Shakira to Aerosmith have been landing here to perform.

But there seems to be an exchange program of sorts going on as an increasing number of Indian bands are being invited to play abroad as well.

The band Medival Punditz started out a decade ago spinning UK style drum and base sounds clubbed with Asian melodies in small little bars in South Delhi.

In fact, club owners would not pay them at times. They stuck on and today, the same clubs pay them over Rs 1 lakh for a one hour set.

Not only that, Glastonbury, the biggest festival in the UK since 1971, has given them a slot this year.

It’s a slot that every major band in the world has aspired for. The credit, they say, goes to musical communication.

We have been getting some good news about people accepting our music and even playing out some of our music at Glastonbury. Some DJs like Bobby Friction, Nihal gave us good feedback that some of our stuff really rocked in UK,” says Tapan Raj from the band.

When you hear that Delhi-based rockers Menwhopause went to Texas a few months ago and veteran musicians Indian ocean have made over ten trips to the states and various other places in the last few years, you realise the glory of playing in the west is spreading. but what about the logistics? Are these bands bringing back money? or just memories?

It’s not that much of a problem. It’s just about flying in and staying in hotels. Logistically, they just give you some money,” said Gaurav Raina from Medival Punditz.

The Punditz are all set to hit Glastonbury hard, but what they and the other musicians showcased have shown you is that no longer is it just the sound of the tabla and sitar that gets you a following abroad.

If your sound is good, be it folk rock or electro, today's age of communication can get you a listening within hours and before you know it you could be getting paid for your gigs in Europe.
