New York: Irrfan Khan drew attention in the US as an actor with his fine performance in The Namesake.
Now, playing the Pakistani official who investigates the killing of journalist Daniel Pearl in the film A Mighty Heart, his American connection has just become stronger.
For Irrfan, it was a challenge playing a character based on a real person rather than one created for a script.
“Somewhere it was there in the back of my head that this is a real case and you have to have your own perspective on it because Mariane must be writing it after she got a perspective on the incident. It's not from Captain's point of view so I was free to interpret,” said Irrfan.
Archie Panjabi plays Asra Nomani, Daniel Pearl's colleague at the Wall Street Journal who becomes Mariane Pearl's principal ally during the crisis.
Preparing for the role, the British actress had to learn to speak Urdu with an American accent as Nomani, an Indian-American, does. But Panjabi fit the role.
“I had the great opportunity of meeting her in Washington. Asra is such an incredible woman, she just stopped everything. I lost my luggage, the airline lost my luggage so as soon as I met Asra, she gave me these shoes and these clothes. So I literally stepped into her shoes the moment I met her,” said Archie.
Of course, this film also provided Irrfan and Panjabi the chance to work closely with Hollywood's power couple - Angelina Jolie, who plays the lead role, and Brad Pitt, a producer on A Mighty Heart.
A Mighty Heart may be based on a non-fiction memoir but it has the dramatic flair of a thriller which actors like Irrfan Khan and Archie Panjabi are a significant part of.
