Indian boxers barred from participation in international meets

New Delhi: The international boxing federation (AIBA) has barred Indian boxers' participation in tournaments across the world. A directive from the governing body Wednesday said that no Indian player will be allowed to play in tournaments under its aegis until the ban on the Indian Boxing Ameteur Federation (IABF) is revoked. The IABF was banned - both by the AIBA and the Indian sports ministry - due to a faulty electoral process.

The AIBA decision has come in the wake of a letter sent by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) asking it how Indian players could feature in international meets. "Since both Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and IABF are suspended, we asked AIBA who would be in charge of sending in entries to various competitions.

"We wanted them to make suitable arrangements so that our boxers did not suffer," sources told the Times of India.

AIBA, the world governing body, said this will be the status quo until the Indian body kept its house back in order.

Last month, the AIBA provisionally suspended the IABF following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspending the IOA. It led to the sports ministry also de-recognising the IABF.
