New Delhi: Republic Day is being celebrated across the country today.
President APJ Abdul Kalam hoisted the tri-colour at Rajpath in Delhi on Friday morning kicking off the celebrations.
Russian President Vladmir Putin was the chief guest for the event.
Indian defence forces put their modern arms and equipment on show. Among the firepower on display, was the T-72, an advanced Russian-made tank. The controversial Bofors gun, which was used in the Kargil war, was also shown.
But the main attraction was the cruise missile Brahmos, which India has developed in collaboration with Russia.
The parade also showcases the diverse colours and cultures of the country, with floats from 28 states taking part in the parade.
The capital though has been under an unprecedented security cover. Around 400 armed commandos of the Delhi Police are positioned along the parade route from Vijay Chowk to Red Fort.
About 15,000 Delhi Police and Army personnel are deployed across the capital.
And like previous years, the parade also showcased the cultural heritage of the country.
There were tableaux from 18 states. Eight union ministries also displayed floats. These tableaux depicted themes varying from natural beauty to traditional crafts and festivals.
Later, school children from Delhi danced to music. Children who won bravery awards also took part in the parade.
