New Delhi: The Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) leaders on Wednesday protested against the detention of more than hundred Indian fishermen detained by Sri Lankan authorities on Wednesday.
DMK leaders including Kanimozhi and TKS Elangovan started protests outside the Sri Lankan High Commission in Chennai.
Counsellor of Indian High Commision in Sri Lanka Sunil Acharya said that the Indian High Commission is trying to get an early release of the fishermen and have been in touch with the Sri Lankan authorities.
106 Indian fishermen have been detained by Sri Lankan police who claim they were doing "illegal" fishing in their waters.
The Indian fishermen were intercepted by Sri Lankan fishermen off the coast of Point Pedro in the north, and were handed over to police, the sources said.
Indian consul general Mahalingam met the detained fishermen on Tuesday. Mahalingam had reportedly been rushed by External Affairs SM Krishna to help the detained fishermen.
The captive fishermen are likely to be produced in court on Wednesday.
This is the fourth such incident of fishermen either being killed or detained in Lanka this year.
