Mumbai: An Indian businessman has been detained in a Spanish jail on charges of terror.

50-year-old Roshan Jamal Khan has been in Madrid jail for over 57 days along with 14 other detainees, all of whom are Pakistani. Four of them were released later.

Roshan was detained on January 19 after allegations that he was involved in planning a terror attack.

His family, meanwhile, is anxiously awaiting his return.

“It seems as though the police have been misguided. The family is very disturbed,” said Roshan’s brother, Mehboob Khan.

A former student of Mumbai's reputed St Xavier's college, Roshan went to Spain in September last year with the hope of making it big in the olive business.

His family has been pursing the case through the External Affairs ministry. The MEA says it still has no word from Spain on the charges that have been pressed against Khan.

Though the Ministry added that Spain had initially denied consular access to Khan for about a month after he was detained.

Indian officials in Spain were allowed access to Khan only after India applied "considerable" pressure.

But the MEA also added that Jamal Khan is being looked after well, which has reassured his family.

What is worrisome are the procedural delays and lack of official communication from Spain.

“This is a propaganda against Islam,” said Mehboob Khan. “Dr Haneef had also been falsely implicated. Educated Muslims are usually targeted,” he declared, as his family fights for Khan’s release.
