New Delhi: Indian hockey team goal-keeper Baljit Singh faces a long battle to recover from a career-threatening eye injury he sustained from a golf ball while training in Pune.

Baljit underwent eye surgery at New Delhi's AIIMS hospital on Saturday but doctors have not promised too much in terms of saving the eye.

Not wearing the regulation safety helmet proved costly for Baljit. His cornea, lens and retina were badly damaged. He also suffered several bone fractures. Despite an emergency surgery at AIIMS, doctors fear he could lose his vision completely.

Baljit is now recovering in a Delhi hospital.

In his first television interview since that fateful day, Baljit Singh spoke to CNN-IBN's Chief Sports Correspondent Digvijay Singh Deo about his pain, fears and hopes.

"It's been 10 days to the injury and there is no pain now, but there is no improvement in the visibility. I cannot see anything. It will take some time because they do not think my eye can take a second operation right now. There is some swelling in the eye and the bleeding has not gone down properly right now," Baljit Singh said.

"One gets injured a lot during practice and some injuries can be quite painful but I had never thought that I would have to face something like this. This is the worst moment in a player's life. I was quite fit at this point in my career and was performing well and in the coming months, there are important tournaments which I had been keen to take part in. I feel bad that I have been injured at a time when I was close to realising my dream," he added.

"I feel scared that if I don't recover in time, it may be difficult for me to come back to the game and be fit for the game again. And if this doesn't get better - the visibility - then the future seems very dark for me, as far as the game is concerned. I am very worried about this," Singh said.

"I am very happy with the treatment that I am getting here. I want the best treatment for myself. If there is any chance of me getting back my visibility, I want it. I want timely treatment so that I can get back to the game as soon as possible," he stated.
