New Delhi: Tripura's Sourabhee Debbarman is the latest singing sensation of the Northeast. She is in the reckoning for the title of Indian Idol. The results will be out on Sunday but for the locals of Tripura, she is a winner any which way.
Even as the entire nation decides who will be the next Indian Idol, the people of the Northeastern state of Tripura already has a winner - Sourabhee Debbarman. This 22-year-old has everyone rooting for her - from Agartala to the young Maharaja.
Road shows, rallies supporting Sourabhee are now a common sight, even in the most remote corners of the state. And this petite singer has achieved a rock star status here during her recent visit to the state thousands of people trailed Sourabhee wherever she went.
She's even managed to do what most leaders have failed to do bridge the communal divide between tribals and non-tribals of Tripura. And her success is representative of the fast changing face of Tripura's tribal society.
"Her success is tremendous for Tripura and for national unity," said Maharaja of Tripura, Pradyot Bikram Kishore Manikya.
Her success proves beyond doubts that there is no dearth of talent in the Northeast, and that all these youngsters need is a platform or an opening.
Many feel that Sourabhee, now a youth icon, just might be able to inspire some misled youths to leave the path of insurgency for more creative pursuits. As for Sourabhee herself, she's just glad to have everyone's support.
"I want to thank everyone from the Northeast, they've been supporting me since I began the journey of Indian Idol," said Sourabhee.
Singing talents from the Northeast like Amit Pual, Prashant Tamang and Debojit have been there but this is for the first time that a tribal girl from the region has made it to the finals of the show. And if she wins <>Indian Idol on Sunday, she will be the first female to do so.
