New Delhi: A young Indian journalist working for ABC TV has been attacked in Sydney.

The woman reporter was on an undercover assignment during the making of the programme Four Corners on education scams involving overseas students, particularly Indians.

"This young woman was walking down the street when she was attacked from behind. She was hit hard by an elbow of a male assailant, she was hurt but she was very shaken. We immediately took her to the police to report the incident. She gave a statement and during the course of that also explained how she has been getting threats from undisclosed sources because of her work," said Mark Bannerman, supervising producer of Four Corners.

The journalist was attacked over the weekend, while working undercover for ABC's Four Corners, a current affairs show that attempts to expose the migration racket and corruption and scams in the education industry.

During her investigation, the reporter went to two migration agents and for several thousand dollars, was able to pay to pass an English language test without having the skills and also buy a fake work certificate.

"We brought this to the attention to the Immigration Department years ago, but it wasn't really acted on," said migration agent Karl Konrad.

Thousands of overseas students go to Australia each year for studies and incidents like these involving them or the multi-billion dollar education industry is bound to boomerang on the Australian government.
