Indian legends lost amidst Harry Potter mania?

New Delhi: Harry Potter and his battles against evil forces is a story that children the world over now swear by.

It’s a story that has broken all records in terms of sales and in terms of visibility but wasn’t the entire concept of victory of good over evil Indian?

What was Ramayana all about? What was the greatest mythological of all times, Mahabharata, all about? They were converted into television epics but still failed to make a mark ala the Potter way.

Now, though, that seems to be changing. The box-office success of animation films Hanuman in 2005 and more recently My friend Ganesha has given an impetus to the attempt to repackage Indian mythology.

Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur's attempt to take a new look at Indian epics in collaboration with Virgin comics is also a step in this direction.

“We have great story tellers in India. My colleagues and started telling the stories and now we are hoping to attract other people into it,” said Kapur.

In the pipeline is also an ambitious multi-crore films on the Mahabharata by both Ravi Chopra and Bobby Bedi.

“When we saw Lord of the Rings, we felt time has come to retell Mahabharata,” said Bedi.

But is all this a little too late? Could India have rode on the Potter wave with it's own baggage of traditional magical mythology?

The only way to find out would be to see if the hype and box-office might of a celluloid version of Ramayana Reborn matches that of Harry Potter.
