New Delhi: The year 2008 was very tough for India Inc with major economies in recession. In India, inflation peaked and Sensex dipped, only a few were able to keep their heads up.
One bank was able to grow steadily, while some of its competitors got caught in the sub prime mess. HDFC Bank continued its upward climb.
In the third quarter the bank showed a 45 per cent jump in profits, remarkable when banks around the world are melting.
The man responsible for this great growth story is CNN-IBN Indian of the Year – Business, Aditya Puri, the Managing Director of HDFC Bank.
Under him, HDFC bank has grown into one of the biggest private banks with over 1.2 million customers.
HDFC Bank has the largest branch network of over 1,400 among all private sector banks - thanks to the smooth acquisition of Centurion Bank of Punjab.
Aditya Puri while growing his bank into a world class one carefully managed risks at the cost of being called a conservative sometimes.
His foresight is praised today with the global economy in turmoil. With 2009 also expected to be a difficult year for businesses worldwide, the industry will be looking up to Puri for leadership.
