The year 2005 was a phenomenal year for Indians as we held the stage almost everywhere; at the United Nations, at the Booker, in the corporate world, behind the lens and not to mention The Global Indian.
So here CNN-IBN’s list of nominees for The Global Indian Award:
Indira Noovi: She was in the Wall Street Journal's list of woman to watch out for in 2005. In 2006 she became the world's most powerful women and most powerful Indian American in the Corporate World. Chennai born Indira Nooyi is the first Indian-born person to become the CEO of Pepsi Co.
Laxmi Niwas Mittal: He continues to be an enigma for the French but we feel he is our best man on the global business platform. Laxmi Niwas Mittal is the richest Indian and the creator of the world's largest steel making company Arcelor who bent the steel in his favour.
Kiran Desai: She created hullabaloo in the literary world by winning a The Man Booker Prize 2006, Delhi born Kiran Desai has reaffirmed the Indian writing on the global platform. She also fulfilled her mother's long cherished dream for the prize.
Shashi Tharoor: He could have been Kofi Annan's successor at the United Nations. Shashi Tharoor a classic UN insider has spent 28 years at this highest seat of diplomacy in his last few years as Undersecretary General. He is in this list for throwing his hat into the ring.
Deepa Mehta: Nominated to the list for her controversial films and hard hitting work. This lady reached for the stars and figures prominently among Indian Global stars.
Sunita Williams: The second Indian-American to fly to space, the lady only proved just how Indian she was when she carried samosas to the space station. She wants to do her part to prolong the “wonderful planet.”
