New York: Mumbai-born Anish Kapoor is one of the best-known names in installation art in the world.

His Cloud Gate at the Millennium Park in Chicago is a landmark of the Windy City.

Several of his installations are also displayed in England, the country he lives and works in.

Now he has his first major display in New York City, in the heart of Manhattan.

Sky Mirror, which opened at the Rockefeller Plaza in New York on Tuesday, is a mirror of highly polished stainless steel, 35 feet in diameter and weighing 23 tonne that reflects the cityscape.

“Working in Manhattan particularly in the contest of not just buildings that are architecture but also buildings that are objects. And I worked to make the Manhattan skyline, particularly the iconic building, 30 Rockefeller Center, as an active participant in this work,” said Kapoor.

The Sky Mirror will remain at this venue till the end of October and might travel to other cities in the US later.

Kapoor is also working on a memorial to British citizens who died on 9/11 in New York. But he is keen on taking his art to the country of his birth.

“There is a show planned actually over the next couple of years in Delhi and then in Mumbai,” said Kapoor.

This installation was organized by the New York non-profit group Public Art Fund, presented by the luxury goods brand Tumi, and hosted by the co-owners of Rockefeller Center, Tishman Speyer.
