Hyderabad: Just a few months after the deaths of two Indian students in the US, another student has been killed, this time in Birmingham, UK.
Twenty-three-year-old Jyotirmayee, who hailed from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, was killed on Tuesday night.
Jyotirmayee was pursuing her medical degree at Birmingham’s Wolverhampton University.
Her friends said that she was killed in her apartment but they have no leads to offer as to who could have committed the crime. Jyotirmayee’s family is shocked and devastated.
"We got a call saying this incident had taken place. We don't have the full details yet. The girl she used to share the apartment with is in hospital in critical condition. We urge the Indian Embassy to look into this,” Jyotirmayee’s uncle, Mallikarjuna Rao said.
"We want the body first. The Government should take the initiative and do their best to bring back the body immediately," Jyotirmayee’s aunt, M Lakshmi, said.
The police in the UK have begun investigations and a post-mortem will be conducted on Wednesday. However, the people and the motive behind the murder still remain a mystery.
This is the second such incident in barely two months involving students from Andhra Pradesh studying abroad.
In March, a young doctor from the state was murdered in Pennsylvinia in the US.
