Indian zing to MTV campus contest

New York: Meet Avir Mitra, Ankur Patel, Karl Sukhia, Shiv Puri and Ahmed Mahmoud: together, they're called Bamboo Shoots.

If you haven't heard of them, you will soon because the judges of the MTV contest this year decided they sounded really good.

So, this New Jersey college band won the Best Music on Campus Artist of the Year.

Their music has nifty riffs, catchy tunes and since four of the five band members are Indian-Americans, a flavor of their culture.

“Our music is based on rock but it's a little more dance-oriented so if you want to dance to our music you can do that. And it also has a subtle Indian influence but nothing too intentional or overwhelming. It just kind of creeps in occasionally,” said vocalist and guitarist of Bamboo Shoots, Avir Mitra.

That includes samples of old Bollywood songs and the beat of the dhol.

Of course, their families in India are thrilled at their success especially since it means a deal worth nearly $1.5 million with Epic Records.

“They know the music stuff, whatever that was, it's happened now. So, they know we're at least satisfied and they're happy about that,” said the other guitarist from the band, Karl Sukhia.

“Definitely,” agreed the drummer/percussionist, Ankur Patel. “All the family members that I have were very proud and happy to actually see us on national television,” he said.

Bamboo Shoots hopes to have its debut album out next year and they definitely want the tour following that to include shows in India.
