Dubai: Mohammed Hussain's Dubai dream has come crashing down. Hussain was tricked into coming to Dubai from India on the promise of higher wages. But now he says he lost his money, all his papers and even the job.
“If you have less money, then the problems are more. We can't even walk freely on the roads. They can arrest us,” says Hussain.
However, it was some relief for Hussain and others like him when last month, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government announced a three-month amnesty for illegal immigrants which meant to either get legal status to stay in the country or face deportation.
On the very first day of the amnesty period, nearly 700 out-passes were issued out of a staggering 1,20,000 applicants from Dubai alone. But now, those very people are face-to-face with a new burden.
The Government of India has said they could return to only six airports in the country.
“A person from Andhra would prefer to go to Hyderabad. Instead, he's been sent to Mumbai,” says volunteer, Indian Consulate, Dubai, Geetha Krishnan.
Although the amnesty period has allowed many Indian workers in Dubai to get themselves regularised as also to come clean and return home, the recent decision of the Ministry of External Affairs has come as a huge shock for them.
“It would be problematic for those coming from smaller places. If we get down in Mumbai, we'll lose whatever we have,” says Hussain.
