New Delhi: This holiday season the country is taking wing and airlines are laughing all the way to the bank.
The cheapest return ticket on the Delhi-Mumbai route now costs over Rs 12,000 and Mumbai – Bangalore minimum fare is pegged at Rs 10,000.
But most routes lead to Goa, with nearly all flights sold out between Christmas and New Year. What’s available costs a bomb. The cheapest return ticket between Delhi and Goa on the weekend before Christmas costs Rs 28,000, the same as a ticket to Singapore.
Says Spice Jet’s Chief Commercial Officer, Samyukth Sridharan, “People are taking to the skies like never before.”
150,000 people are travelling on the weekend before Christmas and nearly all airlines are flying over 85 per cent capacity between Christmas and New Year.
Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi airports are now operating 200% over their capacity.
Those who intend to travel at the time can expect long lines at the check-in counter and at the security gate. And should fog hit north India, as it usually does, chaos can be expected.
But GMR’s VP (Corporate Communications), Dr Vijay Vancheswar does not think problems will besiege the travelers.
“We have made arrangements,” he says, indicating a make-shift camp.
But this new camp can only handle 500 additional passengers. The rest will have to wait outside.
Travellers are advised to travel smart. A way to ensure it is for travellers to call their airlines or check the website for delays before setting out for the airport. It is also better to reach early to avoid serpentine queues.
