New Delhi: Just 48 hours ago, India’s regional party leaders had been hoping to play kingmakers, but as the Indian voter delivered a decisive verdict in favour of the UPA, it became increasingly apparent. Small is no longer beautiful in Indian politics. No more bargaining and arm twisting from leaders who were expecting ministerialships with just a handful of MPs.
The demise of these smaller parties is across the board: Deve Gowda's JD S got just three seats, Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti drew a blank, The PMK for once was not on the winning side, TRS in Andhra got just 2 seats, Vaiko's MDMK got just 1 seats.
For Deve Gowda, whose son and former Karnataka chief minister Kumaraswamy had met Sonia Gandhi just a day before the results, the result ends his hopes of driving the third front engine.
H D Kumaraswamy said, “I am not concerned about getting any Cabinet seats, my main intention to support UPA was for the development of Karnataka.”
For the TRS, and its leader Chandrashekhar Rao, who had switched to the NDA just days before the results, the verdict ends his hopes of making Telengana his bargaining chip. Not to forget Ram Vilas Paswan and Ambbumani Ramadoss, both permanent members of recent Cabinets, but who may have to finally spend some time on the opposition benches. Clearly, the Indian voter has had the last laugh.
