India's Fritzl: Mumbai man held for raping daughters

Mumbai: On a day when justice was finally done in the Joseph Fritzl case in Austria, a similar case was reported from Mumbai where a businessman from the Mira Road area was found to be sexually exploiting his daughters for over 10 years.

Sixty-year-old Kishore Chavan has been accused of raping his two daughters, the elder one for over nine years when she was barely twelve years old.

He claims to have done so to gain prosperity, on the advice of this tantrik Hasmukh Bhai Rathore, who was thrashed by a mob outside the police station.

The two girls were raped by the tantrik too and their mother was complicit in the crime.

“These people must be killed,” says the victim’s maternal uncle.

Residents of the Golden Nest society in Mira Road were clueless about the goings-on in the Chavan home.

The crime came to light when the elder daughter confided in her maternal grandmother and uncle, who in turn informed the police.

“When the elder girl couldn’t see her sister being tortured, she confided in her grandmother and uncle,” says senior police inspector, Mukund Mahajan.

The tantrik denies all allegations. The defence lawyer also said that it was the elder daughter's ploy to avoid marriage. “The elder daughter was under pressure to get married and so she cooked up this story,” says defence lawyer Edgar Braganza.

The Chavans and the tantrik have been remanded to two days police custody and the girls have been sent for a medical examination.
