India's highest war memorial unveiled in Jammu

Jammu: The nation's highest war memorial has been unveiled in Jammu and dedicated to the people of the state intended to strengthen ties between civilians and the armed forces.
The memorial is 60 metres tall, shaped like a rifle and has an eternal flame at its base symbolising the sacrifice of martyrs in Jammu and Kashmir ever since 1947.
It is India's tallest war memorial and recounts the sacrifices of men during five wars over Kashmir.
Men like Jeero Devi's husband sepoy Jeilu Ram of 2 Punjab, who died in 1947, is now being remembered all over again
"He died in 1947 just five days after the war started," says Jeero Devi.
A lot of people have laid their lives in Jammu and Kashmir. It's their sacrifice which has gone in to protect this state," says Gurpreet kaur
Costing around Rs 13 crore the Baldian Stambh (tower of sacrifice) has been in making for the last five years. Its 54 pillars bear the names of over 5,000 martyrs and in an attempt to forge an Army-civilian bond, the structure has been dedicated to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
"There has been an improvement in the relationship of civilian and Army in the state over the last few years. The Army has also shown zero tolerance to human rights violations," claims J-K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
In the last two decades, relation between the security forces and the civilians have been hot and cold in the state but the memorial dedicated to the people of Jammu and Kashmir is perhaps an attempt to strengthen the bond and also to remember the sacrifices gone in while protecting the borders of this state.
