Click to play videoNew Delhi: The Delhi High Court will try and settle the spat between Doordarshan (DD) and private broadcaster Nimbus on Tuesday over match telecast rights.
Talks between the two failed on Monday. And Nimbus moved court challenging the Government's proposal that will make it compulsory for private broadcasters to share feeds with DD.
Talking on the issue, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said, "I will resign if I can't carry out my duty".
That's how sore the Government is over match telecast rights of Nimbus. After failure of the talks between Nimbus and Prasar Bharti, it looks like on Wednesday too you won't be able to see the stars in action.
The cause of the big fight is that Doordarshan believes it entitled to broadcast all cricket played in India on its network and the BCCI should have ensured this before selling the telecast rights to Nimbus.
"Why did BCCI sell rights without consulting us?" said Dasmunsi.
Nimbus has no problems with DD carrying the pictures. But it does want Doordarshan to encrypt the signal, ensuring the feed does not spill over into other countries
"We want the signal to be encrypted," said Nimbus Sport Intl Chief Executive Digvijay Singh.
But Doordarshan claims that all this is all in national interest as its viewership exceeds that of any private broadcaster by millions.
But Nimbus alleges that Doordarshan is looking to make a fast buck.
"Doordarshan wanted us to give them fifty-per cent. It's not just in the interest of the nation," said Nimbus Executive Chairman Harish Thawani.
The DD-Nimbus face-off comes up for hearing in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday and fans at least are keeping their fingers crossed so that when they switch on their TV sets on, on Wednesday, they can catch the action in Cuttack.
