New Delhi: India and the US are taking a new route to take their military cooperation forward. Unable to join hands in combat operations in global hot spots, the focus has shifted from Combat manoeuvres to disaster management.
"It is important for us to work together. Between the IAF and the US air force, in working towards humanitarian assistance and disaster relief," Exercise Director, Cope India, Colonel Stewart Kowall.
At the sixth edition of the Indian Air Force exercise Cope India at Agra, war fighting machines of the formidable militaries have been deployed for humanitarian drills. Even airborne special forces have been roped in.
"At some point you need a path finder or an initial team which would lead on the runway for the forces to follow," US air force, Captain D Walker.
The crack combat forces are being re-oriented for humanitarian rescue.
Mass casualty management is the new war game. Airdropping surgical facilities in disaster zones is at the centre of the exercise.
"Practically speaking we can sustain wounded patients for for days before evacuation, said IAF Medical Officer, Wing Commader A Mukherjee.
In recent years, India and the US have built up sufficient capability to wage war together, if they choose to do so. So, joint use of the military for disaster management is perhaps the least controversial way forward.
