It may look like an ordinary air pillow, but this seemingly harmless device is helping militants from across the border to sneak into India. Fitted with a small rubber tube, the improvised pillow works as a cheap oxygen cylinder, allowing its user to breathe underwater, and swim across the border.
"We have found that militants have been using oxygen bags. Whenever there is patrolling, they dip into the water bodies and breathe easily through these pipes,” PR Manhas, DIG, Poonch-Rajouri range
Even though the border fence has been a deterrent for infiltrators, they have been trying new ways to sneak in and this improvised air pillow is a cheap and a steady option, which police say was used in two recent infiltration attempts.
Security forces say rivers like the Munnawar Tawi and the Chenab form natural gaps along the Line of Control and the international border. The militants are increasingly using these gaps.
“The militants know the routes through Sunderbani, Chamb and Akhnoor area extremely well. They also have proper guides, which tell them which points to cross over from,” says PR Manhas.
Army authorities say militants have found ways to even get across the border fence.
And it's not all low-tech. Security forces have also seized instruments like palm tops with code sheets and maps, mobile television sets and solar chargers in the past.
“There are reports that silent explosives are being used to damage the base of the fencing pillars and high quality chemicals are used to dissolve the fence, Colonel SD Goswami, Defence Spokesperson.
