The Austinpatti police on Sunday recovered a country-made pistol, a cartridge and two grenades from a tank near here.
According to police, the weapon and the ammunition were found wrapped in a cloth at the Koothiyarkundu tank near Thiruparankundram.
The police recovered the ammunition based on information provided by three youth - Karthick (20), Velmurugan (23) and Adhiskannan (20) of Thoppur village, who were passing by the tank on Sunday morning. A team led by Chandrakumar, Sub-Inspector of Police, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, defused the grenades and examined them.
Each grenade weighed about one kilogram with circumference of 22 centimetres.
The grenades, generally used by Army personnel, were powerful and could cause great damage if they exploded, police said.
The bombs and pistol were found rusted and could have been thrown into the tank long ago. They were noticed by the three youth since the tank was drying up, the police added.
V Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police, Madurai district, DSP Purushothaman and Inspector Sethumani Mathavan inspected the recovered ammunition.
The SP instructed the police personnel to hand over awards to the youth in appreciation of their information.
Police registered a case and are probing if the pistol and grenades were disposed of at the tank by any former army personnel.
