New Delhi: Infosys will bid farewell to one of its founders and Co-Chairman Nandan Nilekani on Thursday. He will be given a farewell at the Infosys campus in Bangalore.

Nilekani stepped down as Infosys Co-Chairman last week but the IT giant had confirmed that his resignation would come into effect from July 9.

Nilekani will be taking up a new charge as the Chairperson of Unique Identification Authority of India, at Prime Minister Monmohan Singh's invitation.

He will now enjoy the rank of Cabinet Minister.

The Unique ID programme is the United Progressive Alliance's most recent project to assign each citizen of India a unique code number, so as to target specific social programmes as well check cross-border terrorism.

Nilekani will preside over the entire exercise.

Speaking on this big career change, Nilekani sent an email to his colleagues at Infosys, "It has been a difficult and gut wrenching decision to make as I have been a part of the Infosys family for almost 30 years and it's the only life I have known. I firmly believe my learning and experiences at Infosys will help me pursue and contribute to a larger cause and I am thankful to each of you for making this journey so special."
