Infosys has many capable leaders: Murthy

Mumbai: Infosys Technologies Ltd could be led by an outsider after co-chairman Nandan Nilekani left the company to lead the National ID Project. Infosys chairman and chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy told this to Network18 in an interview.

“I think it (Nilekani's exit) will make a difference but the beauty of this organisation is that it heals pretty quickly. It rises up to the challenge," said Murthy, who believed Infosys had many leaders capable of leading the company.

"I was in Germany last week and I met five CEOs. I met two CEOs in New York. It is true that the departure of somebody as important as Nandan leaves an important void but the beauty of the organisation is that it quickly fills that hole and moves on,” Murthy told Udayan Mukherjee, Managing Editor of CNBC-TV18.

Asked if Nandan was his favourite colleague amongst the founders, Murthy said: “I have liked all of them. There is no doubt at all but certainly Nandan was one person with whom I had lot more interactions. We used to argue quite a lot. We used to differ quite a lot. We used to appreciate each other quite a lot. It was, in some sense, a pretty close relationship.”

Infosys on Friday saw its revenues decline 2.9 percent to Rs 5,472 crore in the first quarter, from Rs5,635 crore in the fourth quarter last fiscal.

The company has projected a year-on-year decline of 1.9-0.1 percent in the second quarter to Rs 5,318-5,413 crore. "We believe that in the short-term, the global economic environment will continue to be challenging. We are working closely with our clients to help them navigate the downturn," Infosys chief executive S Gopalakrishnan said in a statement in Bangalore.
