New Delhi: The investigation in the murder of five Sikkim Police jawans by their own colleague in Old Delhi on Sunday morning has taken a bizarre turn. The jawan who was injured in the incident has allegedly confessed that he murdered his colleagues.

Nari Lepcha has allegedly told Delhi Police officials that he attacked his colleagues because of one them tried to sodomise him. J B Subba, the prime suspect earlier, has now been given a clean chit.

Subba was not even present at the Dena Bank branch in Daryaganj, Old Delhi, where the incident took place, said Alok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central District

The Sikkim Police team was guarding the Dena Bank branch when the Delhi Police got a call at around 0450 hrs IST about gun shots from the building.

The dead jawans are Vishal Tiwari, Karma Bhutia, Shanti Veer, Kumar and Lakshman Subba. It is not clear yet how Lepcha was injured but it was he who first accused J B Subba of the killings but then broke down when investigators found holes in his statement.

Lepcha has alleged that Tiwari tried to sodomise him. An axe has been found at the branch and it is believed Lepcha attacked his colleagues with it. The exact sequence of the attack and who fired shots is not known yet.

DCP Kumar said it was Lepcha who called the police after killing his colleagues. Kumar said the investigation is still on and Lepcha is under arrest.

Sikkim Chief Minister P Chamling has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the dead jawans. Senior officials of the Sikkim Police are cooperating with the Delhi Police in investigations.

The bank treasury is near the historic Golcha Cinema and the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Central Delhi. Daryaganj is a historic part of the city and famous for its second-hand book market on Sunday.
