Jaipur: In a shocking incident the in-laws of a woman in Rajasthan reportedly starved her and kept her in inhuman conditions for over a month.

Nihal Kanwar can barely talk now but her condition is telling. Her family says she's been subjected to inhuman torture for not being able to have a baby, ten years after her marriage.

After repeated demands for money from her family for her treatment, Nihal says her in laws began to give her frugal meals, if any and a month back she was dumped in the cattle shed behind the house.

“My mother-in-law would beat me up and tell me I don't have children. I used to tell her where do I get children from,” says Nihal.

A week ago when her brothers went to meet her for Rakhi, they were shocked to find their sister in this cattle shed living with goats and starved for over a month. And when they decided to bring her back with them, Nihal's in-laws again demanded money.

“When I told them we want to take her back, they said ‘we won’t let you’. I told them I’d call the police. Then they told me I should leave my motorbike behind if I want to take her and when I bring her back I should get Rs 1 lakh along,” says Nihal’s brother, Indra Kumar.

The police have registered a case of cruelty and dowry against Nihal's husband and in-laws. Her in-laws meanwhile have been absconding ever since the matter was reported, and no one from the in-laws family was available for comment.
