International champion forced to apply for constable's job

Kendrapara, Orissa: While the country is still celebrating the unprecedented three medals at the Beijing Olympics, a national rowing champion from Orissa has been forced to apply for the job of a constable .

Twenty-three years old Pravasini Dwivedi rowed against the odds to become a champion but failed to win the battle against poverty .The daughter of a poor farmer in Orissa's Kendrapada district, Pravasini won gold at the Asian Rowing championships in Hyderabad in 2004.

Pravasini father's died six years ago and since then she has been desperately looking for a job for her family’s survival. And therefore she queued up for the job of a police constable in a recruitment drive.

"When she travelled world wide for sports we thought that she would get a decent job. But it is only to save us from starvation that she is forced to apply for the job of a constable,” says Pravasini’s mother Ansumala Dwivedi.

Pravasini is yet to be selected or even be assured of the job but she is so upset that she even refused to speak to the media.

The sports fraternity in the area is appalled at this indifferent behavior of the state government towards an international rowing champion.

"Pravasini was a role model. When she is treated like this it will obviously discourage others from taking up sports as a career,” says a sport enthusiast Duryodhan Jena.

Pravasini's plight is one similar to what thousands of sports persons face in the country. The pride that comes from winning laurels for the country soon goes bust when faced with this neglect and indifference. This is the dark side of Indian sports.
