'International love guru' Shashi Tharoor should get love affairs ministry: Naqvi

CNN-IBN | Updated Oct 31, 2012 at 02:11pm IST

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again taken a dig at Minister of State for HRD Shashi Tharoor calling him a 'love guru'. "For an international love guru like him, a ministry of Love Affairs should be created," BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

This comes a day after Tharoor responded to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's 'Rs 50 crore girlfriend' comment on his wife Sunanda Pushkar. "My wife is worth a lot more than your imaginary 50 crores. She is priceless. But you need to be able to love someone to understand that," Tharoor had tweeted to his 1.5 million followers on Twitter on Tuesday. It got retweeted over 800 times, sparking a Twitter clash between his and Modi's followers.

Modi had in an indirect attack on Tharoor, called his wife a Rs 50 crore girlfriend. "There was a Congress leader who was a minister in Parliament. He was accused of amassing wealth from cricket. He had said in Parliament that he is not connected to the Rs 50 crore in the lady's name. Have you ever heard of Rs 50 crore girlfriend?" Modi had said. Modi was alluding to the cricket controversy in 2010 involving Pushkar which led to Tharoor's resignation as Minister of State for External Affairs.

The Congress took the issue further by demanding an apology from Modi. All India Congress Committee Secretary Sudhakar Reddy also said that Modi should have resigned by now. "He should resign have by this time. Narendra Modi insulted Manmohan Singh ji and called him 'maun'Mohan Singh. He should be ashamed of this. He should also take his words back on Shashi Tharoor and his wife. He should not use wrong words because it does not suit him," Reddy said.

Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhvadia alleged that Modi had insulted all women in the country with his comment. Modi, of late, was using language that did not behove a political leader and had lost "decency", Modhvadia added.

The Left Front also condemned Modi's remark on Sunanda Pushkar. CPM leader Brinda Karat said such a speech could only come from a 'sick mind'. "As a woman and citizen of India, I totally condemn this comment. Such a speech can come from a sick and perverted mind. Does their RSS ideology teach them this? The entire world knows his ideology. Now it has even become clearer that his ideology is anti-women, anti-people and anti-democracy. Why does the party have to call such people here whose ideology is such? This also shows the stand of the party," Karat said.
