Internet romance in Punjab turns tragic

New Delhi: Twenty one-year-old Tanuja, a resident of Ludhiana, was fond of chatting with friends on the Internet.

One such friend was Prabhat – who operated out of his computer shop - Prabhat Computers in Jalandhar Cantonment. Their friendship blossomed into romance, and on June 20 this year the two got married.

But Diwali, the festival of lights turned dark for Tanuja's family, when they came to know she hanged herself over alleged dowry demands from her husband.

“Tanuja had a Rs 5.5 lakh fixed deposit and Prabhat used to demand that the money should be given to him. There were fights over this and this has led to Tanuja taking the extreme step,” says Tanuja's brother, Gourav.

But Prabhat says he is shocked at her death, and has been admitted to a Jalandhar hospital. He says the dispute was not over money, but over which place to visit during the festival days – Ludhiana, where Tanuja belonged to or Chandigarh where Prabhat's parents live.

“We met on the Internet and later got married. Dispute was because I wanted her to go to Chandigarh where my parents are while she wanted to go Ludhiana where her parents are. Following this she took her life,” says Prabhat.

The police meanwhile have arrested Prabhat and registered a case against him under section 304 B.
