New Delhi: The Indian Premier League's Governing Council has accepted the request from the Delhi and Hyderabad franchisees to name Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman as 'Icon Players'.
As an ‘Icon Player’ the two will only turn out for their respective home cities in the Board of Control for Cricket in India-backed Twenty20 tournament.
However, the decision will need to be approved by all eight franchises before the players' auction on Wednesday in Mumbai.
If all the franchises agree, then Sehwag and Laxman will not be among the pool of players to be auctioned on Wednesday.
They stand to earn 15 per cent more than the next-best paid player in their team following their ‘Icon Player’ status.
Meanwhile, Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar met Shah Rukh Khan at the Bollywood star's residence in Mumbai on Monday evening.
The visit comes just two days before the players' auction of the IPL is scheduled to take place.
Shah Rukh Khan owns the Calcutta franchisee of the IPL and Akhtar is in the list of players to go under the hammer.
Akhtar had also met Shah Rukh late last year during the Pakistan cricket team's tour to India.
