New Delhi: A Madhya Pradesh judicial commission has indicted three IPS officers of in the death of an assistant sub-inspector that happened three-years ago. It’s the first ever case of a policeman killing another.
Diwari Lal Rawat, an assistant sub-inspector in Morena, was known for his operations against dacoits. So when news came on January 31, 2004, that he was killed by dacoit Mahaveer Jat, not many spotted a conspiracy. Except his family.
Leela Rawat, Diwari Lal Rawat's wife says, “He was taken to Rajasthan and killed by sub Inspector Harish Sharma of Gram Suraksha samiti in a fake encounter."
The BM Gupta judicial commission that probed the encounter has now found out that Rawat did not die in the encounter as reported by his colleagues. The commission says that the then Gwalior IG VK Panwar's decision to reinstate Rawat, who was under suspension, without an inquiry evoked suspicion.
The commission suspects Rawat was put in the anti-dacoity cell only to facilitate the fake encounter. The commission however hasn't mentioned any motive for the encounter. Panwar, who is now an Additional Director General, denies the charges.
"It has been proved that Rawat was killed by dacoit bullets and forensic reports have confirmed this,” said V K Panwar.
The report also names the then Gwalior DIG Gazi Ram Meena and SP C S Malviya for allegedly covering up the crime. The BJP government in the state, which appointed the commission is now dragging its feet on acting against the IPS offcers.
"The commission has given its report but the cabinet has decided top form a sub committee," said Laxmi Kant Sharma Public Relations Minister.
