New Delhi: Former Punjab DGP S S Virk has been arrested in a disproportionate assets case. A Punjab police team made the arrest from Maharashtra Sadan in Delhi.

Virk, a Maharashtra cadre officer, had been placed under suspension by the Prakash Singh Badal Government on the Election Commission's direction after his name cropped up in a land scam.

Virk was removed from the DGP's post ahead of the Assembly elections in the state in February. He is considered close to former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

Virk, who was under suspension had Ignored the orders of Punjab government and on Thursday, joined in his parent cadre in Maharashtra.

The Punjab government had recently started disciplinary proceedings against Virk in an alleged land fraud in Kharar in which Virk was blamed for buying a 'benami' land of a war widow and not paying her the full amount.

After the SAD-BJP government took over in Punjab, Virk had written two letters to the Centre, requesting that he be transferred back to his parent cadre in Maharashtra.

In the letters, dated March 5 and March 22, Virk had expressed apprehension over the fact that he would be ill-treated by the new state government officials for he was considered close to Amarinder Singh.

The Punjab government is likely to write to Centre against Virk going back to Maharashtra without its consent.

The Punjab Police also raid the home of a terrorist, Sukhwinder Singh's. The Akali government claims that Virk had close links with Sukhwinder.
