New Delhi: IPS officer R K Sharma will appeal in the Delhi High Court against a lower court’s judgment holding him guilty of the murder of journalist Shivani Bhatnagar in 1999.
A court in Delhi on Tuesday found Sharma and three others guilty of murder, criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence. His lawyers insist the evidence is insufficient to prove the charges.
"We have not seen the detailed order yet but we still maintain that there was no evidence," said defence lawyer J S Malik.
The court acquitted Ved Prakash Sharma and Ved alias Kalu, who allegedly kept a watch at Shivani's residence in Nav Kunj apartments in east Delhi on the day of the murder and alerted the hired killer Pradeep.
Sharma asked Pradeep to kill Bhatnagar because she was blackmailing him to marry her, the prosecution told the court. Sharma’s lawyers say the prosecution doesn’t have strong evidence to support its claims.
"We will argue on the basis of the circumstantial evidence," said defence lawyer B B Goswami. The court will announce punishment in the case on March 20.
