Iran prez terms UNSC as illegitimate

Associated Press

Tehran: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Friday called the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and its decisions "illegitimate" as long as the world body is dominated by the US and Britain.

"What sort of Security Council is this? The whole world knows that the US and Britain are enemies of the Iranian nation," Ahmadinejad told tens of thousands of supporters at a pro-Palestinian rally in the capital Tehran.

The United States and Britian -- along with France, Russia and China -- have power to veto any Security Council measures.

"The time is over for such logic. Under such circumstances, the Security Council is illegitimate and its decisions are illegitimate," Ahmadinejad said.

"You want to be the judge, the complainant and the enforcer," he said, addressing the US and Britain. "No one accepts this from you."

Iran has been locked in a standoff with the West over its nuclear programme. A draft UN resolution on Iran is expected to be introduced in the Security Council early next week, and diplomats have said they would seek limited sanctions on Tehran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment.

Ahmadinejad said there was no guarantee that Western nations would give Iran nuclear fuel, and that Iran would not stop its efforts to enrich uranium and produce nuclear fuel.

Officials have said they plan to generate 20,000 megawatts of electricity through nuclear energy in the next two decades.
