Irish President intervenes in Savita Halappanavar's death probe row

Ireland: In a rare intervention, the Irish President Michael D Higgins came out in support of the demand of Savita Halappanavar's family for an independent inquiry into her death saying that any investigation 'must meet the needs of the family'.

Meanwhile, Savita's husband Praveen Halappanavar told CNN-IBN that her medical report was tampered with. Praveen has been demanding an independent public probe into the circumstances that led to her death. He also rejected the Irish health authority's inquiry panel, saying that he has 'no faith in the Irish government inquiry'.

The 31-year-old Savita, who was 17 weeks pregnant, was found to be miscarrying and wanted an abortion. But the doctors declined saying theirs is a Catholic country and they cannot abort a foetus. The dead foetus was later removed and Savita was taken to the high dependency unit and then the intensive care unit, where she died of septicaemia on October 28. An autopsy carried out two days later found she died of septicaemia "documented ante-mortem" and E coli ESBL.

Meanwhile, Savita\'s husband Praveen Halappanavar said that her medical report was tampered with.
