VISAKHAPATNAM: A woman was set on fire by her husband because she gave birth to a second girl child. The ghastly incident occurred in Dabbanda village in Anandapuram mandal in the district Friday morning.Papini Sominaidu, an agricultural labourer, of Dabbanda village, 20 kms from here, married Gorle Someshwari (24) four years ago. The couple had a girl three years ago and another girl was born to them some nine months ago. Sominaidu found fault with his wife for giving birth to only girls and he started harassing her physically. On Thursday night he thrashed Someshwari for the same reason. Unable to take it any longer Someshwari called up her parents, residents of Nandanipalem in Pendurty mandal in the district, to take her back home. She urged them to come to pick her up as early as possible on Friday.Someshwari's parents, who along with some women activists reached Sominaidu's home on Friday morning, found her in flames screaming for help. They immediately called 108 and shifted her to King George Hospital in the city for treatment. Someshwari died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.Someshwari's parents charged Sominaidu with setting her ablaze for giving birth to girls Reshmathi and Bhavya. They wanted the police to book cases against Someshwari's inlaws saying that they too harassed her. Bheemli police have registered a case against Sominaidu who is absconding.
