Is Apple's new iPhone a hot buy?

New Delhi: Apple's much-awaited iPhone is to be launched in New York on Firday but the buzz is that the cool new phone may not be such a hot buy.

If you have been seduced by all the hoopla around the iPhone, wait till you hear the grief it can cause.

It's out finally - the most hyped cell phone ever. If everybody's been telling you why the iPhone's the hottest thing on the planet, here's a little checklist on its downsides.

First - at $600, it ain't cheap and second - if you're American, you'll be stuck with a slow AT&T network for two years - thanks to a deal with Apple. But that's not all.

USA Today Tech correspondent Ed Baig says, “She's very poky, compared to the 3G technology being deployed in new phones. Was disappointed they didn't have a 3G compatible phone. Big Achilles heel. If you could somehow improve the network, great. Couple of things on my wish list. GPS for one. So people can find out where they are. Voice dialing is on a lot of phones, not on this. Would like to see that.”

If you are an obsessive office email checker, stay away. Many companies have blocked inbox access on iPhones because of security concerns. There's more - you can't add memory beyond 8 GB - a pity for a multimedia phone. The built in battery is quite impossible to replace.

And the camera is a crummy two mega pixels with no flash, no zoom and no video.

”If someone comes to me and says they want to wait for a few moths till a fresh model comes along, it’s hard for me to tell them no, “Baig adds.

Apple anticipates it will sell 15 million iPhones by the end of 2008. But the consumer will ultimately be the judge and jury on whether Apple still has the iPod touch.
