Is Karunanidhi-Maran patch up on the cards?

Chennai: M K Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, celebrated his 56th birthday on Saturday.

The big political greeting for Stalin came from his cousin Kalanidhi Maran who heads the Sun network. Sources say Kalanidhi met Karunanidhi as well, which perhaps signals a change in the political equations within DMK’s first family.

In May 2007, a bitter family feud between the Marans and Karunanidhis had led to Dayanidhi Maran's exit from the central cabinet.

As recently as four days ago, Karunanidhi wrote a scathing poem severely criticising both his grand nephews Dayanidhi and Kalanidhi Maran.

Despite all that and a warning from Karunanidhi to his party to not spend on advertisements for birthdays, Stalin's men chose to bring out several ads in a news paper owned by the Maran family's sun network.

Observers believe that the main battle for the Marans has been with Karunanidhi's elder son M K Azhagiri. Their closeness with M K Stalin could perhaps mean yet another chapter in the convoluted politics of the DMK's first family.
