Is microblogging the latest social networking fad?

New Delhi: He might look like an SMS junkie, but actually he is an SMS wizard.

Lalchung can send a single message to 6,000 friends instantly.

Microblogging, the latest social networking fad has made it possible for him.

Here is how it works:

  • It is much like Facebook, except you except you don't really need a PC.
  • First - sign up from your phone or website and get your friends to sign up too.
  • Then, whenever you message your buddy list you can reach them all, yet pay for just one SMS.
  • And Lalchung's already figured out useful ways of using microblogging.

“A boy was admitted in Kolkata hospital and I flashed the message and after a few hours I got a response from more than 20 people who were ready to give blood,” says Lalchung.

And because it’s easy and cost effective, the trend is catching on in India.

Nokia and Reliance offer mobile blogs, but they are slightly different. They give you a web address where all your messages are updated.

But you can't SMS everyone together as you are charged separately for each SMS. Also, they work only on expensive phones.

With even Google offering a microblog called Jaiku, microbloging looks like it might click.

In the west, microblogs including Twitter even warn you about your friends’ current location.

So, all you cyber junkies looking for new thrills--go micro-blogging.
