New Delhi: They say an apple keeps the doctor away, However, the problem rises when you start looking like one.

If your body shape is anything resembling an apple, you might already be on your way to abdominal obesity.

"Apple shaped" people store excess body fat around their stomach and abdomen, while there are others who are “pear shaped” who tend to put on weight on their hips and thighs.

The sign of abdominal obesity is a waist size greater than 40 inches for men, and 35 inches for women.

“Indians at more risk of abdominal. fat stored around the stomach and abdomen is a key risk factor for weight-related disease,” says endocrinologist Dr Anoop Misra.

Misra and his research have found that every second adult in New Delhi is obese.

Conservative estimates across India show that approximately 10-15 cr people satisfy some criteria of obesity.

“Genetics, lifestyle, diet, physical activity and stress all combine together to fuel the epidemic that we are seeing now,” says Misra.

Obesity is a dangerous epidemic of the affluent society because it is a condition that can increase your risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and arthritis.

So how do you know if you qualify as obese?

You can do it my by measuring the body mass index (BMI).

Measure your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres. For Indians a BMI above 23 and beyond means that you are obese and prone to health risks. And more than two times the ideal weight qualifies as morbid obesity.

And if you think that you are obese then here’s a basic food plan that you can follow”

  • Eat healthy and cut out junk food and sugary foods.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid yo-yo diets as they lead nowhere and may be damaging.

And remember if you want results that last, go in for a long-term lifestyle change then don't aim to lose weight overnight.
