New Delhi: We all go online for fun and work, why not log on for mental help?
Logging on to an online counseling portal is relatively simple. But the advice that comes from the supposedly trained counselors available, round the clock, at the other end, is even simpler.
So how many people in India log on for help?
“We almost have 10,000 registered users in two months. We get two to three K clicks every day. We get about 150 to 200 chats everyday with an average chat time of 25 minutes,” says CEO relationshipforever.com, Amanveer.
And counselors find that a broad range of issues come up for discussion.
“There are mainly marital issues, love issues for the younger lot, work stress, examination stress and even some issues on parenting,” says chief psychologist, relationshipforever.com, Dr Pallavi Barthakur.
However, you should be warned. The counseling sites are not helpful for those who are depressed or those who need psychiatric help.
Moreover, going to a chat room may sound convenient, but it can't replace a face-to-face counseling.
“I think that one-on-one contact is absolutely critical. There's a lot of information that a counselor or psychologist would pick up on,” says psychologist, Arpita Anand.
Online counseling is not a field that is regulated in India so you shouldn’t come to a chat room expecting too much.
However, if you want to vent or reach out to someone, then counseling sites may be able to help you.
